Children learn to read by first learning a language. Yet many young children struggle with the speaking, listening, and vocabulary skills that are the foundation for reading, and these challenges often go unnoticed until they begin to fall behind. The OxEd TEL Ted Program helps schools identify children who need extra support early and gives teachers fun, research-based activities to build the language skills that lead to stronger reading. By strengthening these skills before reading difficulties develop, we can help more children become confident, successful readers.

The OxEd TEL Ted Program helps schools and districts spot and sort oral language delays early with an MTSS-aligned oral language toolkit serving students in K-2. Through intentional, structured, evidence-based intervention, TEL Ted provides strong foundations for all students, while ensuring those students who need the most help are supported through a structured intervention that focuses on building vocabulary, narrative, and active listening skills. If we strengthen oral language before reading failure occurs, we can dramatically reduce the number of struggling readers and help ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Impact

A randomized controlled trial in 193 elementary schools found that children receiving TEL Ted demonstrated significantly larger gains in their oral language skills compared to the control group.

“I feel the TEL Ted intervention has allowed me to listen much more carefully to my students’ language use, and since most of them are multilingual learners, it has given me some new data around where they are in their English language proficiency development in regards to speaking and listening. This intervention has given me the opportunity to put more focus and attention on their language use in an engaging and meaningful way, and I feel very appreciative of that!”
